Caminho a passos largos para me tornar, oficialmente, numa emigrante. Quer dizer, agora que penso nisto, se calhar já sou! 

Pouco depois de aterrarmos os corpinhos (não necessariamente as cabeças) na Austrália, soubemos que até ao final do ano teríamos de nos registar por cá. Avisar o Estado que viemos para ficar (pelo menos por quatro anos) e que temos uma morada. 

Ora, na semana passada lá fomos nós até Sydney, ao Consulado Geral de Portugal, tratar do assunto. Lá subimos até ao 17º piso de um daqueles prédios altíssimos do centro da cidade (acho que nunca tinha subido tantos andares num prédio), entrámos as portinhas e dissemos ao que ali íamos. Passaportes, vistos e cartões de cidadão revistos e fotocopiados, dados registados, morada australiana fornecida e o assunto ficou despachado em 15 minutos. 

É que ainda nem acredito. A sério! A morada de nossa casa tem Austrália no final. Austrália! Às vezes juro que ainda não acredito. É que nunca perdi muito tempo sequer a imaginar-me a visitar este país, quanto mais a vir viver para cá. Afinal de contas (eu sei que estou sempre a repetir esta frase mas...), isto é do outro lado do mundo. Nunca pensei mudar-me para cá não só por questões financeiras mas também porque sempre achei que não seria capaz. Enfim, isto são outros quinhentos que vocês já estão fartos de ouvir. 

Confesso que às vezes dou por mim a imaginar-me daqui a 60 anos a dizer aos meus netos: “a avó está velha e já mal consegue mexer a asa mas, atenção meus meninos, que eu já vivi na porra da Austrália, ali do outro lado do mundo”. Ganda pinta! Vou ser uma avó super rebelde, eu sei que vou.

I’m taking big steps to become a real emigrant. I mean, now that I think about that, I think I already am!

Days after we landed our bodies (not necessarily our minds) in Australia, we knew that we had until the end of the year to register ourselves here. Letting the State know that we are here to stay (for at least four years) and that we have an address. 

As that, last week we went to Sydney, to the Portuguese Consulate, to take care of this business. We got to the 17th floor of one of those really high buildings of the CBD, we walked through the doors and told the lady why we were there. Passports, visas, Portuguese citizen cards all reviewed and copied, all that registered, an Australian address given and everything was done 15 minutes later. 

I can’t even believe it. Really! Our home address has Australia at the end. Australia! Sometimes I swear I don’t believe it. I never lost too much time imagining myself visiting this country, not even living here. After all (I never get tired of saying this), this is on the other side of the world. I never thought of coming here not only because of money issues, but also because I thought I would never had the courage to do it. Well, another story you’re tired of listening to. 

I confess that sometimes I find myself imagining the future, 60 years from now, telling my grandchildren: “granny is old and can’t even move the wing but, attention little kids, I already lived in fuckin’ Australia, on the other side of the world” (please people, don’t mind about the fuckin’. It’s just an expression a guy around here uses a lot to describe how relaxed these people are). How cool will that be? I’m going to be a super cool grandmother, I know I will.

A huge that to Lenita Margarido for the photo!

Não visitei todas as cidades do mundo, não estive sequer em todos os continentes nem viajei para as principais capitais, mas sou capaz de arriscar dizer que Lisboa é das cidades mais bonitas. E digo-o assim, correndo o risco de ser chamada de maluca, mas para além de toda a luz que a cidade tem, as paisagens, os recantos, os cheiros, as pessoas e a comida, para mim há ali um encanto especial. 

Estou feliz deste lado do mundo, mas morro de saudades de Lisboa. E quanto mais me afasto, mais percebo que Lisboa é a minha casa. Não consigo não ter saudades do meu canto na Artur Lamas que me fez tão feliz. Do taco de madeira, do corredor apertado, da cama encostada à parede por ser tão pequena a casa. E é bom sentir saudade, não é? É sinal que fomos ali felizes. 

É no sentido de apaziguar a saudade e partilhar espaços e pedaços que a mim me fizeram feliz que escrevo este texto. Quero mostrar-vos onde fui feliz em Lisboa e, se possível, levar-vos até lá, testar se sentem a mesma espécie de felicidade que eu senti. 

Começamos pelo Restaurante Panorâmico do Monsanto. Fui até lá num dia de muito frio, em janeiro passado. Não é fácil lá chegar (até porque não é propriamente legal lá entrar). É preciso entrar no Parque Florestal do Monsanto pelo lado certo, pelo lado da Avenida de Ceuta, para conseguir subir até aos portões do velho restaurante. Depois disso é furar a rede e, com cuidado para não tropeçar em qualquer destroço, explorar, ver, inspirar, fotografar. No meio de tanta destruição conseguimos ter as melhores vistas de Lisboa que eu já vi. É surreal. 

Lamento apenas que a destruição do Panorâmico não seja algo natural e tenha sido acelerada pelas pessoas que por lá passam, e em vez de conservar um espaço que é fascinante, querem ‘deixar a sua marca’ e dizer: “aquele vidrinho fui eu que parti”. Num dos dias em que fui lá passear, um casal com um ar simpático fez questão de arremessar uma pedra a um vidro de uma estrutura. Eu estava a passar por baixo. Sorte a minha que faltavam dois segundos para estar mesmo na zona onde os vidros caíram. Mais tarde, num dos dias em que as autoridades estavam a vigiar o espaço e eu tentei entrar, um Polícia explicou-me que é por essas pessoas que querem deixar a sua marca, que tentam proibir as entradas no espaço. Porque se há uns que querem apenas ver, há outros que fazem questão de destruir.

I didn’t visit all the cities in the world, I was not in all continents and I haven’t even travelled to the main capitals, but I am capable of saying that Lisbon is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And I can say this, running the risk of being called crazy, but besides all that light, the landscapes, the smells, the people and the food, Lisbon has, for me, a special enchantment. 

I am happy on this side of the world, I am, but I miss Lisbon so much. And the more I get away from that city, the more I realize that Lisbon is my home. I miss my corner at Artur Lamas that made me so happy. That wood floor, the straight hall, the bed leaning to the wall because of the small size of the house. And it’s good to miss it, isn’t it? It means we were happy there. 

To calm down the way I miss it, I’m going to share with you places and moments that made me happy. I want to show you where I was happy in Lisbon and, if possible, I want to take you there and test if you feel as happy as I felt. 

We start at Monsanto Panoramic Restaurant. I was there in a very cold day, in January. It’s not easy to get there (and it’s not legal, also). You need to get in to the Monsanto Forest Park from the right side, from Ceuta Avenue, to reach the old restaurant’s gates. After that you just have to get in and, with caution so you don’t stumble, explore, see, inspire, photograph. In the middle of so much destruction we can have the best views over Lisbon. It’s surreal. 

I am just dory for the Panoramic’s destruction. It’s not natural and you can see that people made that, instead of maintaining this beautiful place. They want to leave ‘their mark’ and be able to say: “I broke that glass”. 

In one of the days I was walking around there, a couple that looked nice threw a stone to a glass of a structure. I was passing underneath. Lucky me that was two seconds far away from the place where all the broken glass felt. Later, in one of the days that authorities were watching the place and I was trying to get in, a police officer explained to me that because of those that break things, they try to forbid all entries in the space. Because, some of us just want to see the beauty, others want to destroy things.

O Restaurante Panorâmico do Monsanto foi inaugurado em 1968 e tornou-se num dos sítios mais requisitados de Lisboa. São três andares acima do solo e outros quatro por baixo da terra que foram de animação e de diversão. O edifício do Panorâmico é enorme! E está tão destruído que se torna assustador, especialmente o andar subterrâneo onde foi a discoteca que, com a destruição e as infiltrações de água, torna-se num cenário digno de filme de terror. Por outro lado, quanto mais subimos no edifício, mais nos surpreendemos com a paisagem que é capaz de nos tirar o ar. É este contraste entre o terror e a beleza que torna o espaço tão maravilhoso.

Monsanto Panoramic Restaurant was opened in 1068 and quickly became one of the most required places in Lisbon. Three floors above the ground and other four below. Seven floors that were of pure joy and fun. Panoramic’s building is huge! And it’s so destroyed that it gets scaring, special the lower ground floor, where the disco was, that is destroyed and has some water infiltrations that turns it into a terror movie scenario. The higher we get in the building, the best the view gets. It’s this contrast between terror and beauty that makes this such a wonderful place.

“Vens à SIC hoje? Podes vir connosco!” 

Foi a primeira frase que lhe ouvi, o primeiro convite, a primeira proposta, há mais de uma mão cheia de anos atrás. Estávamos no primeiro ano de licenciatura em Ciências da Comunicação e eu tinha acabado de ser transferida de outro curso e, no meio de tanta gente nova, sentia-me um peixe fora de água. Foi ela, a miúda que usava aqueles ténis abertos no calcanhar tipo chinelo, que veio ter comigo, com um convite que mudaria a minha vida. Depois de trocarmos as primeiras palavras, acho que nunca mais nos largámos. Descobrimos juntas que a faculdade não era pera doce mas que, na verdade, se fazia com uma perna às costas no intervalo de saídas à noite produtivas e de imperiais na esplanada que sabiam a mel. Descobrimos juntas que o que não era fácil, era viver longe dos pais, mas que para este mal, o remédio era termo-nos uma à outra e que, à falta de melhor, havia sempre uma massa com natas, bacon e queijo e uma manta para aquecer o coração. Descobrimos que o que não era fácil era o amor, que nessa altura ia e vinha com a facilidade do vento. Descobrimos que o que não era fácil era ser adulta. Crescemos e juntas começámos a traçar sonhos e a palmilhar o árduo caminho entre o estágio e as aulas da faculdade a que acabávamos por não ir. Terminámos a faculdade, chorámos o que tínhamos a chorar cheias de felicidade nos corações, fizemo-nos mulheres e fomos à luta. Procurámos trabalho, revirámos o mundo e encontrámos soluções, profissões, paixões. Crescemos, deste-me a conhecer o amor da minha vida e apoiaste as minhas mais recentes decisões mesmo que isso custasse a minha presença aí, onde tu estás. 

Não foi sempre fácil – mas haveria alguma possibilidade de o ser entre duas mulheres de fibra? E também não é fácil ser adulta. Não é que gostássemos de ter menos obrigações, menos projetos, que muitas vezes nos separam fisicamente. Gostávamos só de ter dias com 40 horas para nos sentarmos a uma mesa e nos ouvirmos, nos partilharmos e sermos. E hoje, hoje, gostávamos só de ter uma nave espacial supersónica que me pusesse a jantar contigo num pedacinho. Hoje, que é o teu aniversário e eu não estou por perto. Ainda assim, estou perto o suficiente para saberes que o meu amor por ti não tem fim. Apazigua-nos o coração saber que hoje eu não estou aí mas que teremos mais, no mínimo, 80 aniversários para partilhar juntas. 

Parabéns minha bomboca, a mais escurinha – e, por isso, a mais parecida comigo – a que tem as bochechas mais fofas, a determinada e que luta, todos os dias pela verdade não só mas também desportiva. A que tem tanto medo de crocodilos, como de cães, como de cogumelos, como de bananas. Parabéns, minha boboca <3

“Are you coming to SIC today? You can come with us!”

This was the first sentence she told me, the first invitation, the first proposal, more than a hand full of years ago. We were in the first year of university and I had just been transferred from another course and was feeling like an outsider. She, the girl that usually wore those open-toe sneakers, came up to me with an invitation that would change my life. We never separated after exchanging our first words. Together, we found that university was not that easy, but that, actually, we could do it with a leg on our back in the interval of going out at night and drinking beer on the esplanade. Together, we discovered that it was not easy to live away from our parents but that we had each other, and a pasta full of cream, bacon and cheese and a blanket to warm our hearts. We discovered that love was not easy, specially at that time, when it kept coming and going. Together, we discovered that being an adult was not easy. We grew up and together we started to dream and walking the tough way between the internship and college classes we ended up not going to. We finished university, we cried all we had to cry, full of happiness in our hearts, we became women and went fighting. We searched for a job, turned the world upside down and found solutions, professions, passions. We grew up, you showed me the love of my life and supported all my decisions even when they made you deny my company there, where you are. 

It wasn’t easy all the time – but, was there any chance of being easy with two fibre women? And it’s not easy being an adult. Not that we would like to have less obligations, less projects, that often separate us physically. We just wanted to have 40 hours’ days to sit down at the table and listen, share and be. And today, today, we just wanted to have a supersonic spacecraft that could put me having dinner with you in a few minutes. Today, it’s your birthday and I’m not around. Still, I’m close enough for you to know that my love for you is endless. It soothes our hearts to know that I am not there today, but we will have at least 80 more birthdays to share. 

Congratulations my pumpkin, the tanned one - and, therefore, the most similar to me – that has the most awesome cheeks, the determined and the fighter for the not only but also sportive truth. The one that is as afraid of crocodiles, as she is of dogs, mushrooms and bananas. Happy birthday my love <3

Até já esfrego as mãos de cada vez que começo a escrever sobre coisas que acontecem quando vivemos na Austrália. A sério. É que é assim daqueles textos que me dá mesmo gozo escrever. Porquê? Porque acho que é uma forma engraçada de vos mostrar o que é isto de viver do outro lado do mundo. É uma maravilha, é sim senhora, mas de facto há coisas que nos conseguem baralhar o cérebro de tão diferentes que são. Coisas que vivemos uma vida a acreditar que são básicas e do senso comum, chegamos aqui e percebemos que afinal não são assim tãaaaaaooo básicas. Um exemplo? Ora vamos a isto.

Viver na Austrália é...

1. ...andar descalço em balneários

Só de escrever isto já sinto vontade de bolsar. A sério, quem é que em Portugal se atreve a apanhar uma micose daquelas que só passa cinco anos depois, quando já nos caiu a unha? Ora, já vos tinha dito que o pessoal adora andar descalço por todo o lado, mas... nos balneários amigos, a sério? Onde há humidade e todo um ambiente fantástico para a criação de germes e coisas? É vê-las a olhar para mim de lado quando saco do meu chinelo e o calço no pé depois de uma bela ginástica para não tocar sequer com o mindinho no chão. Eu é que sei o que sofro!

2. ...sacudir muito bem tudo o que habita na varanda durante o dia, antes de levar para dentro de casa

Estendais de roupa, especialmente. Ao fim do dia, antes de o meter dentro de casa, é preciso dar-lhe umas boas sacudidelas por todo o lado. Para quê? Para afastar toda a bicharada que poderá estar confortavelmente acomodada entre os lençóis ou as toalhas. Quem diz os estendais, diz o calçado que deixamos a arejar na rua. Se calha de nos lembrarmos de arrumar os sapatinhos já depois do pôr do sol, somos obrigados a entrar em modo mineiro, a analisar todo o interior do sapato com o auxílio da lanterna do telemóvel.

I even wipe my hands every time I start writing about things that happen when we live in Australia. Seriously. This is one of the things I really like to write about. Why? Because I think this is a funny way of showing you what is it like living on the other side of the world. It’s a wonder, it is, but there are things can are capable of messing my mind by being so different. Things that we live a life believing that they are so basic, from the common sense, we arrive here and realize that they are noooot that basic. Na example? Let’s do this! 

1. ...walking barefoot in changing rooms 

Writing about it makes me want to poke. Seriously, who in Portugal dares to catch a one of those ringworm that lasts for five years, when a nail has already fallen? I had already told you that around here everybody loves walking barefoot but... at changing rooms, friends, are you serious? Where you can find humidity and a fantastic environment for a germ-making and stuff? I can see them looking at me every time I get my slippers and perform a gymnastic ball to put them on my feet without touching with the pinky on the floor. 

2. ...shake off everything that lives on the balconi during the day, before taking it inside

Specially clothes lines. At the end of the day, before you put it in the house, you have to shake it all over. Why? To ward off all the bugs that may be comfortably nestled between the sheets or the towels. Who says the clothes, also says the shoes that we let catching some air outside. If you are unlucky enough just to remember doing this after the sunset, you have to do it using the mobile flashlight to analyse the interior of your shoe and make sure it’s safe to bring it inside.

Mais um episódio nesta vida de emigrante.

Eu venho de uma aldeia pequena próxima do centro de Vila Real. Borbela, é o nome da minha bela terra que tem o melhor dos dois mundos: é próxima da cidade e por isso nunca a vi como remota, é suficientemente afastada para manter o registo de aldeia, onde metade da população são meus primos do lado do pai, e a outra metade são meus primos do lado da mãe. 

Ora, claro que aldeia de Trás-os-Montes que se preze tem sempre um elevado número de emigrantes que regressam à sua terra no meu-querido-mês-d’Agosto, com os seus sotaques meio português, meio francês (na maioria). Sempre achei muita graça ao facto do pessoal português chegar às suas terras com uma data de tiques e vincos, especialmente linguísticos e, confesso, muitas foram as vezes em que eu própria ‘gozei’ com situação. “Jean Pierre, tu vas tomber. Jean Pierre, tu vas tomber. Jean Pierre, olha que partes os dentes, car*lho”. Quem nunca?? 

Agora que emigrei, meus amigos, tenho a dizer-vos que percebo perfeitamente tudo aquilo que sempre vi acontecer na minha aldeia no meu-querido-mês-d’Agosto. Há uns dias fiz uma chamada para o meu banco português. Coloquei uma questão e terminei com a expressão inglesa “right?”, que em português significa “certo?”. Saiu-me, assim sem mais nem menos. Quando dei conta já tinha dado a maior prova à senhora que estava do outro lado da linha que sim, eu era emigrante. 

O que eu me ri com isto. Foi aqui que eu percebi que estava no bom caminho para ser uma emigrante a sério, quando, inconscientemente fui buscar uma língua que tenho usado todos os dias para comunicar. Adoro falar português e faço questão de, por aqui, dizer o meu nome tal como ele é. Dizer que sou Ana e não Hannah. Dizer que sou Catarina e não Catherine. Mas a verdade é mesmo esta: o inglês é a língua que, especialmente no meio profissional, eu uso para me expressar. Por isso mesmo, é natural que involuntariamente o meu cérebro acabe por misturar as duas línguas quando estou descontraída. Afinal de contas, passamos o ano num país diferente e não devemos sentirmo-nos pressionados a escondê-lo quando temos contacto com o nosso país. Da mesma forma que, quando estou em contacto com australianos, não sinto vergonha do meu sotaque aportuguesado. 

Claro que, em vez de prometer que vou deixar de ‘gozar’ com todos os emigrantes que o fazem, prometo antes que vou também gozar comigo sempre que o fizer. Afinal de contas, ser emigrante não é motivo de vergonha. É antes motivo de orgulho porque isto é uma batalha e eu vim enfrentá-la, right?

Another episode of this emigrant life. 

I come from a little village close to Vila Real’s city centre. Borbela is the name of this beautiful village that has the best of two worlds: is close enough to the city and has that, I never saw it as remote, but it’s far away enough to be a little village, where half of the population are my cousins from my mother’s side, and the other half are my cousin from my father’s side. 

As a little village from Trás-os-Montes, a region from the north of Portugal, Borbela has a large amount of emigrants that go back to their home in the middle of the Portuguese summer, right in August. Most of them go back to Borbela talking half in Portuguese and half in French and it was fun to see all those Portuguese emigrants going back with their new accents. I can confess that sometime, I even made fun of them. “Jean Pierre, tu vas tomber. Jean Pierre tu vas tomber. Jean Pierre, olha que partes os dentes, car*lho”. In Portugal, everybody makes fun of the way emigrants only use Portuguese when they go nasty. It’s a fact! 

Now that I am an emigrant, my friends, I have to tell you that I perfectly understand everything I always saw happening in my village in August. Some days ago I made a call to my Portuguese bank. I made a questions and ended up asking “right?”. It came out without even thinking about it. When I realized, I had already given to the lady on the other side of the line, the biggest proof that I am an emigrant. 

I laughed so much! That moment was the moment when I realized that I am on the right way to become a real emigrant, when, without even noticing it, I used an expression of the language I use everyday to communicate. I love speaking Portuguese, I really do, and I always say my name as it is and not with a different accent. I always say I am Ana and not Hannah, and I always say I am Catarina and not Catherine. But the truth is that English is the language I use in my everyday life, specially at work. As that, it is natural that sometimes my brain mixes both languages. After all, we spent the year in a different country and we shouldn’t feel pressured to hide this fact when we have any contact with our hometown. Same way that, when I am with Australians, I never hide my portuguese accent. 

Sure that, instead of promising that I will never more make fun of all emigrants that mix languages, I promise that I will make fun of me everytime I do this. After all, being an emigrant is not a shame. It is instead a motive to be proud of, because this is a battle, and I am fighting it, right?

Ouvi por aí que o mundo está louco. O Trump está no poder e isso já diz muito sobre as cabecinhas que habitam o planeta e o rumo que se quer para a sociedade. Mas não vamos discutir este tema, que é muito cedo e a azia causa desconforto. Vamos antes, hoje, falar sobre outro tema que é tão recorrente, está tão batido, mas sobre o qual parece que nunca é demais falar. 

Ontem li algures na internet que, em Portugal, uma figura pública, mulher, após ter trabalhado durante nove horas numa sessão fotográfica não remunerada, foi informada que o material que resultou desse trabalho, não servia para a capa de uma certa revista. Não servia porque, veja-se bem, ela estava demasiado gorda, sem condições para vestir fatos de banho. As fotografias foram, supostamente, banidas pela major da edição, que considerou que a Helena, a tal figura pública, estava gorda. Ora, eu já tive oportunidade de me cruzar com a Helena umas quantas vezes e posso assegurar que não é mais gorda que eu. Arriscaria dizer até que é bem mais magra. 

Não é que esta história me choque particularmente ou me faça ter vontade de virar o mundo do avesso, como tantas vezes tenho quando levo uma chapada da realidade. Afinal de contas, a Helena trabalha nesta indústria que – já não é surpresa - é exigente e injusta, que é tantas vezes desumana. Uma indústria que devia ser o exemplo e que muitas vezes não percebe a responsabilidade que tem por fazer chegar a sua mensagem a tanta, tanta gente. É só a mim que me soa controverso uma revista feminina fazer este tipo de coisas? Exigir às caras que passam pelas suas capas, que sejam todas iguais - bonitas, felizes, extremamente magras e bronzeadas? É pedir muito que se ponha na capa de uma revista uma mulher com um peso normal para a sua altura? Pelos vistos é.

Estão a ver o padre que apregoa o bom senso e depois, quando vira costas à paróquia, é a pior pessoa do mundo? É mais ou menos o que acontece aqui. Estamos a falar de uma revista feminina que, em teoria e nos seus conteúdos, defende de alguma forma a valorização da mulher. Na prática, atrás do pano, a coisa não é bem assim. E o problema do mundo é esse mesmo. Apregoar-se uma coisa e praticar-se outra. 

O que eu acho maravilhoso aqui, é alguém incomodar outro alguém pedindo-lhe (sim, porque, embora tivesse retorno não direto, não era um trabalho pago) para ser protagonista de uma sessão fotográfica e depois, depois de estar a trabalhar horas naquilo, pura e simplesmente desvalorizar o seu esforço e, pior, tecer considerações sobre a sua forma física. Acho maravilhoso alguém considerar ter o direito de rotular outro alguém com o título de “gorda”, acrescentando a ideia “para mim não serves”. Pior, pedir que a “gorda” pagasse 1500 euros pelo tempo que o fotógrafo e a equipa de produção gastou com ela quando, inicialmente, ela nem ia ser remunerada. Não é devolver o que lhe foi pago. É pedir-lhe o dinheiro que ela nunca ia receber. Tudo isto porque está “gorda”.

Ao saber desta história não deixo de pensar “e se fosse comigo?”. E se, um qualquer dia, chegassem ao pé de mim e me dissessem que eu estava demasiado gorda? Que o meu corpo não estava em condições para usar fato de banho ou biquíni? Como se, ao usá-lo, estivéssemos a fazer mal à humanidade? Quem é que se poderia achar no direito de interferir com a minha vida, a minha estima? 

Coloco estas questões e penso nas pessoas que ouvem este tipo de observações todos os dias, no que devem sentir. Parece que o corpo deixou de ser propriedade individual e que é legítimo criticar, sem pensar nas consequências que isso possa trazer para o visado.

Todos nós tecemos considerações sobre os outros, todos. Mas será que temos o direito de as dizer aos outros, deixando-os em dúvida sobre a forma como optam viver? Será que temos direito de os excluir mediante os nossos rótulos?

E o que me choca no meio disto tudo, é que estas observações são feitas com base em questões estéticas e não no que realmente importa, na saúde. Não, não sou defensora das modelos plus size, tal como não sou fá das modelos demasiado magras. Sou fã de mulheres normais, saudáveis e equilibradas com força para enfrentar o mundo. Mas para essas, para essas parece haver cada vez menos um lugar.

O mundo está louco.

I heard that the world is going crazy. Trump won the power and that means a lot about the little heads that are living in this world and the way we want society to live. But, let’s not discuss this topic. It’s too early. Let’s talk about something that is so common, and everybody talks about, but it’s never enough. 

Yesterday I read somewhere around the internet that, in Portugal, a public figure, woman, after working nine hours on a non-payed photoshoot, was informed that the material of that work, wasn’t good enough for a magazine cover. And it wasn’t good enough because she was too fat, with no conditions to wear a bikini or a swim suit. Well, I had the opportunity to be with Helena, the public figure, a few times and I can guarantee that she is not fatter than me. She is even thinner, I would risk saying. 

Not that this story chocks me or gives me will to turn this world upside down. After all, Helena work for a industry that – no surprise in here – is demanding and unfair. A industry that should be an example to follow and that doesn’t understand the responsibility of reaching huge amounts of people with its message. Is it only me that considers a controversy a feminine magazine doing this kind of things? Asking for all the women that goes to a cover, being all the same – pretty, happy, extremely thin and tanned? Is it to ask for too much to have in the cover a woman with regular sizes? Seems like it is. 

Do you see that priest that asks for people to be nice and, when he turns his back, he is the worst guy in the world? That’s what happens here. We are talking about a feminine magazine that, in theory and with its contents, somehow defends woman valorisation. In practice, things are different. 

What I think it’s ridiculous in this story is that someone bothers other someone asking (yes, because, no matter all the indirect gains, it was a unpaid job) to be the protagonist of a photoshoot and then, after working on that for hours, just telling her that his effort was not enough and, the worst part, weave considerations about her body shape. It’s ridiculous someone thinking that has the right to tell another someone that she is “fat”, adding the idea “you’re not good enough for me”. Worst that this, asking the “fat” one to pay for 1500 euros for the photographer and production team wasted time. It’s not about giving back a money she earned. It’s about paying for something she would never receive. All of that because she’s “fat”. 

Knowing this story, I can’t stop thinking “what of it happened to me?”. What if, in a random day, someone approached and told me that I was too fat? That my body wasn’t in shape to wear a bikini? Who the hell could think that has the right to mess with my life, my esteem? 

I ask all this and I think about the people that listen to all this everyday, what they may feel. Seems like body stopped being an individual property and became legit of being criticized, without thinking on all the consequences. 

We all make considerations about others, all. But, do we have the right to tell others, leaving them in doubt about the way they live their lives? Do we have the right to exclude them with our labels?

What really chocks me in all this, is the fact that these observations were made based in esthetical matters and not based in what really matters: health. I am not a fan of plus size models, just like I am not a fan of skinny ones. I’m a fan of normal woman, healthy and equilibrate, strong enough to face the world. But, for those, there is no place. 

The world is crazy.

Acho que só vou deixar de ter tema para escrever sobre factos curiosos desta vida na Austrália lá para 2051, porque até lá, amiguinhos, creio que vou estar a descobrir e a constatar coisas que me vão deixar em modo “woow, a sério que isto acontece”?

A Austrália é de facto um país muito interessante, uma realidade totalmente diferente daquela em que sempre vivi em Portugal e, talvez por isso, me deixe impressionar por coisas que, por cá, os australianos acham tão banais. 

Ora então, vamos lá a isto, amiguinhos, que eu sei que o que vocês querem é factos e não conversa fiada. Desta vez ficamos pelos cinco em vez dos habituais 10, mas regressamos ao tema em breve.

A modos que, viver na Austrália é...

1. ...ter máquina de secar roupa em casa. Obrigatoriamente!

É que não há casa em que eu tenha entrado (e já entrei em muitas, especialmente na fase em que estava à procura de uma para arrendar), que não a tenha na lavandaria colada ao teto. Sinceramente não sei bem qual é a necessidade uma vez que aqui está sempre uma temperatura porreira para secar a roupa, mas eles lá hão-de ter a razão deles.

2. ...à noite, ter as ruas muito mal iluminadas.

Assim à moda portuguesa em 1990. Postes de madeira, luz ténue. Dizem que os australianos não fazem questão de iluminar as ruas como deve ser à noite porque não há criminalidade (ou pelo menos não há muita). Eu cá, com pouca iluminação, prefiro, por exemplo, não ir para a rua á noite correr sozinha. Mas isto sou eu!

3. ...no ginásio não ter secador de cabelo MAS ter ferro e tábua de engomar. 

Sair do ginásio com o cabelo molhado em sério de risco de apanhar uma gripe, tranquilo. Ir treinar com a roupa da moda amarrotada é que não! Já imaginaram o pesadelo que seria ter os calções engelhados ou o top com umas marcas ranhosas mesmo a estragar aquela foto que vai parar ao instagram? Um pesadelo.

4. …only finding huge bikini underpants.

And this is when you understand that Portugal is some years ahead. I want to buy some bikini underpants but all I find is underpants with huge amounts of cloth in the ass. What for, people? Let your asses be free at least on the beach and get properly tanned! 

5. …watching people work in strange positions in the office. 

And here it is a thing that should be taken to Portugal. Working during eight hours, five days a week, sat on a chair is a torture. Here, it’s frequent to see people working standing on desks (adaptable, of course) or on their knees. For those who work sat on a chair, you know why I say this is such a good habit.

Ter irmãos é não sermos inteiros. É estarmos divididos por quantos irmãos termos. No meu caso, eu estou dividida em três. Em mim própria e nos dois irmãos que me completam. A mais velha e o mais novo. É como um puzzle. E um puzzle só está completo quando tem as peças todas. Ter irmãos é saber que nunca estaremos sozinhos e que, por mais amigos que tenhamos, os irmãos conhecem-nos como ninguém porque para além de saberem sobre questões banais da nossa vida, eles sabem precisamente de onde viemos, em que ambiente crescemos, quais são as nossas raízes. E partilharam tudo isso connosco. Ter irmãos é a melhor coisa do mundo. Sou uma sortuda.

É sobre um em particular que eu hoje quero escrever, sobre o mais novo, o meu bebé, o homem da minha vida, o que nasceu há precisamente 17 anos. 17 anos, como é que é possível? Foi também há 17 anos que a minha vida mudou, nunca mais foi a mesma. Tornei-me, eu própria, num ser humano melhor, sabendo que terei sempre um mais novo por quem olhar. 17 anos. 17 anos que podiam ser repletos de parvoíce típica da adolescência, mas que, também sendo, são muito mais do que isso. São 17 anos cheios de maturidade, de personalidade e de desejos. São 17 anos cheio de companheirismo, de um adolescente que, mesmo longe, está sempre perto de mim.

A última vez que o vi, que o abracei, foi no aeroporto há precisamente três meses atrás, minutos antes de me ver partir rumo à Austrália. Chorou – porque é preciso um homem maturo para chorar – e eu chorei também, sabendo ainda assim que aquele, eu nunca o perderia. É o meu irmão, aquele que procura sempre saber de mim mesmo que eu esteja do outro lado do mundo, aquele que se cansa dos meus conselhos, mas que os ouve pacientemente até ao fim, aquele que embora já seja (muito) maior que eu, procura abraços e beijos. Aquele que, mesmo no pico da adolescência (uma fase da vida em que existir, por vezes, já é demasiado difícil) é educado e ponderado. 

Não há forma de descrever o amor que se nutre por um ser humano que vimos nascer, a quem demos o biberão, mudámos a fralda, ajudámos nos primeiros passos, levámos à escola, fizemos a barba pela primeira vez, mostrámos bandas das quais gostávamos, conduzimos até aos amigos para ir sair à noite, demos conselhos para a entrada na faculdade, alertámos para os perigos da viagem de finalistas... não há forma de descrever.

Respiro fundo de contentamento e satisfação por saber que, enquanto irmã, fiz o que pude para criar um ser humano como deve ser, um homem com um H enorme, que respeita os outros e que é livre do preconceito.

Hoje, como nos últimos anos, não estou à lareira com ele no 11 do 11. Mas, como nos últimos anos, ele sabe, tu sabes (que eu sei que vais ler este texto, como todos os outros), que o meu amor por ti não tem tamanho, não tem limite. E que num mundo que nem sempre será justo contigo, eu estou aqui e tu terás sempre lugar comigo onde quer que eu esteja neste mundo, seja em Portugal, na Austrália ou em outro qualquer canto.

Having brothers is not being a hole. Is always being divided for how many brothers we have. In my case, I’m divided in three. In myself and in my two brothers that complete me. The oldest one and the younger one. Like a puzzle. And a puzzle is only complete when it has all the pieces together. Having brothers is knowing that we are never alone and that, no matter how many friends we have, brothers know us better that anyone. They know all that banal things about us, but they also know precisely where we came from, where we grew up, what our roots are. And they share all that with us. Having brothers is the best thing in the world and I am a lucky girl. 

Today, I’m writing about one in particular, my younger one, my baby, the man of my life that was born 17 years ago. 17 years, how is that possible? 17 years ago my life changed, was never the same. I became a better human being, knowing that I had there a younger one to take care of. 17 years. 17 years that could be full of stupid things proper from an adolescent but, also being that, are much more than that. 17 years full of maturity, personality and wishes. 17 years full of companionship, of an adolescent that, even far away, is always close to me. 

Last time I hugged him was in the airport three month ago, minutes before I left to Australia. He cried – because it takes a man to cry – and I cried too, knowing that that one, I would never lose him. It’s my brother, the one that always looks for me even if I am on the other side of the world, the one that gets tired of listening my advices but the one that listens to them till the end, the one that looks for hugs and kisses. The one that, even in the middle of adolescence (a stage of life too hard to live), is educated and balanced. 

There is no way to describe the love that a person can feel for a human being that we saw growing up, to whom we fed, we change diapers, we helped in the first steps, we took to school, we shaved for the first time, we showed music bands we liked, we drove to friends to go out at night, we advised about university, we advised about finalists trip… there is no way to describe it. 

I can take a deep breath knowing that, as a sister, I did what I could to raise a man with a huge M, that respect others and it’s prejudices free. 

Today, like in the last years, I am not close to fireplace with him at 11 of 11. But, like in the last years, he knows, you know (because I know that you are reading this like you read all my texts), that my love for you has no size, has no limit. And that in a world that won’t always be fair with you, I am here and you will always have a place close to me in this world, even if it’s in Portugal, Australia or any other corner.

Claro que, um evento destes merece sempre uma ida até ao baú (até porque adolescente que é adolescente nunca deixa que lhe tirem fotografias, pelo que não há cá grandes registos recentes deste moço) | Sure that, a day like this, deserves going to the chest to find some pictures (because a true adolescent never let anyone to take pictures of them, so I have no recent photos of this man)
