Balanço do ano. Todos fazemos, de uma forma ou de outra, certo? Devem ser poucas as pessoas que ficam indiferentes ao terminar de mais um ciclo e acredito que de uma forma mais ou menos voluntária, acabemos todos a pensar nas coisas que aconteceram nos últimos 12 meses. No fim, acabamos todos com uma das mesmas duas frases: “que grande ano” ou “que caca de ano”. 

Da minha parte posso afirmar que 2016 foi assim do caraças. Não foi daqueles anos assim-assim, em que fiz mais do mesmo, trabalhei nas mesmas coisas, vi pouco de novo a acontecer. Não. Foi mesmo do caraças. 

Em 2016 rodeei-me de família tantas vezes quantas possíveis, fui feliz a partilhar mesas com os amigos. Viajei, passeei, conheci, vi e ouvi mais música. Continuei de mão dada ao meu amor por qualquer trilho. Aceitei novos desafios e mudei a minha vida. Passei para a prática objetivos de 2015, grandes objetivos, e coloquei na minha vida um ponto de viragem que me fez de facto sentir que tenho 25 anos e que a vida tem muito para me oferecer, basta perder os medos. Há um ‘antes’ e um ‘depois’ em 2016. Um ‘antes’ e ‘depois’ daquela manhã no aeroporto. 

Antes? 

2016 começou em grande. Foi o ano em que nos metemos num carro com amigos do coração e rumámos a Madrid por um fim-de-semana, para ver pela segunda vez na minha vida Foals. Semanas depois estava sentada na Aula Magna a ver The Tallest Man on Earth. 2016 foi o ano em que a B. descobriu a sua própria sombra, começou a falar como gente grande e aprendeu a dizer o nome do J antes do meu (sacaninha!). Foi o ano em que percebi realmente que isto de ter amigos é tanto como ter família. Passeei pelo Douro como se fosse a primeira vez. Foi o ano em que amei a minha casa, o meu ninho, como nunca. Foi o ano em que perdi os medos e as vergonhas e, com muita ajuda, criei um projeto só meu, este blogue. Organizei, também com muita ajuda, uma festa onde consegui reunir os meus amigos maiores. Foi o ano em que fiz férias com os amigos. Foi o ano em que vi o pai e a mãe no hospital e quis cuidar deles como se fossem eles os meus filhos pequenos. Foi o ano em que pus um ponto final na rotina e me despedi sem certezas. Esvaziei a minha casa, a minha primeira casa a sério, e meti tudo dentro do meu carro rumo ao Norte. 

Foi o ano em que me despedi da minha família, dos meus amigos e voei, no voo mais longo a que alguma vez me atrevi.

Year balance. We all do it, one way or another, right? Must be few people that can stay indifferent to the end of a cycle and I believe that, even if it is in a less volunteer way, we all end up thinking about things that happened in the last 12 months. At the end, we all end up with one of these two sentences: “what a great year” or “what a shitty year”. 

For me, 2016 was a great year. Not one of those years that was just fine, in which I did more of the same things, worked on the same things, saw nothing new happening. No. 2016 was a really great year. 

In 2016 I surrounded myself with family as many times as possible, I was happy sharing the table with friends. I travelled, walked around, saw new things, listened and saw more music. Kept with hands crossed with my love through any path. I accepted new challenges and changed my life. Putted in practice some goals from 2015, big goals, and gave my life a turning point that made me feel that I am actually 25 and that life has so much more to give me, I just have to lose my fears. There’s a ‘before’ and a ‘after’ in 2016. A ‘before’ and a ‘after’ that morning at the airport. 

Before?

2016 started very well. This was the year in which we went to Madrid by car for a weekend to see for the second time in my life Foals (it’s always worth it). Weeks later I was at Aula Magna, in Lisbon, to see The Tallest Man on Earth. 2016 was the year in which B. discovered her own shadow, started talking like big people do and learnt how to say J.’s name before mine (you little bastard!). This was the year during which I realized for real that having real friends is like have family. I walked around Douro as if it was the first time. This was the year during which I loved my house, my first house, like never before. This was the year in which I lost all my fears and, with help, built a project, this blog. I organized, also with help, a party where I gathered my biggest friends. This was the year in which I spent holidays with friends. The year in which I saw my mother and father at the hospital and wished to be their mother and take care of them as if they were little kids. This was the year in which I quitted my job. I emptied my house, my first real house, and putted everything in my car to the North. 

This was the year during which I said goodbye to family and friends and flew away, on the longest flight I ever went in.

Aniversário, trabalho, trabalho, mexer o rabo, trabalho, Natal, respirar, etc. e tal e nisto percebo que não ponho os pés (ou os dedos) aqui há mais de uma semana. Não é que tenha grandes novidades para dar ao mundo, mas é sempre bom mostrar que estou viva e de boa saúde, com os dias ocupados ocupadíssimos, mas toda contente nesta correria. Tema para outra conversa, noutra altura, porque é mesmo de Natal que vos quero falar, agora que já consegui voltar a sentir uma ponta de fome, embora me tenha, durante dois dias, alimentado para qualquer coisa como meio ano (há coisas que não mudam mesmo estando do outro lado do mundo). 

Desde que saí de Portugal percebi que, se no país para onde vamos, encontrarmos uns quantos portugueses, estamos safos. Estamos safos porque cria-se imediatamente um laço que não é de sangue, mas que a dificuldade e o facto de passarmos todos pela mesma experiência reforça. Assim, passar o Natal a dois nunca foi uma opção. Apanhámos a boleia da mesma família que nos encaminhou assim que chegámos e passámos dois dias em puro reboliço, como se quer no Natal. 

Acordámos no dia 24 de dezembro bem cedo, como de costume. Abrimos as janelas do quarto e testámos a temperatura da rua. 25 graus, no mínimo, ao início da manhã. Vestimos os fatos de banho, pegámos nas toalhas e rumámos à praia cumprindo assim ritual natalício australiano (há que juntar o melhor dos dois mundos). Já em casa, cozinhámos até à hora de jantar e reunimos à mesa oito pessoas, nem todas portuguesas, à volta do bacalhau.

Birthday, work, work, moving my ass, work, Christmas, breathing, etc. and suddenly I realize that I haven’t put my feet (or fingers) here for more than a week. It is not that I have great news to give to the world, but it is always good to show that I am alive and in good health, with busy days, but so happy in this run. A great topic to another time, because I really want to talk about Christmas, since I've been able to start feeling hungry again, even though I've been fed for two days for the next half a year (some things don’t change even on the other side of the world).

Since I left Portugal, I realized that, if in the country where we go to, we find a few Portuguese guys, we are safe. We are safe because we immediately create a bond that is not blood, but that the difficulty and the fact that we all pass through the same experience reinforces. So spending Christmas just the two of us was never an option. We picked up the ride from the same family that walked us as soon as we arrived, and spent two days in pure tumult, as Christmas asks for.

We woke up early on December 24 as usual. We opened the bedroom windows and tested the outside temperature. 25 degrees, at least, early in the morning. We dressed in the bathing suits, took the towels and went to the beach, fulfilling the Australian Christmas ritual (we have to combine the best of both worlds). At home, we cooked until dinner time, and we gathered eight people, not all Portuguese, around the codfish.

A 25 rumámos a Sydney para nos juntarmos a uma larga mesa familiar numa casa portuguesa recheada de croatas, americanos, australianos e portugueses, de comida sem fim à vista, jogos de tabuleiro e jardins e sofás a oferecer a sesta depois do almoço. 

No meio de tudo isto agradecemos às pessoas que temos à nossa volta e que não deixam que nos sintamos perdidos nesta ilha no hemisfério sul e agradecemos ao fuso horário por aqui ser noite enquanto as nossas famílias celebravam o Natal na mesa do costume, na sala do costume e por aqui ser dia enquanto em Portugal os nossos dormiam. 

Claro, claro que não sabe ao mesmo celebrar o Natal aqui, tão longe. Não deixámos nunca de sentir saudades e de desejar estar a celebrar as festas da mesma maneira de sempre. Mas fomos felizes da maneira que conseguimos ser. E sim, foi Natal para nós.

On the 25th we headed to Sydney to join a large family table in a Portuguese house filled with Croatians, Americans, Australians and Portuguese, with endless food, board games and gardens and sofas offering the sleep after lunch.

In the middle of all this, we thank the people around us that don’t let us feel lost on this island in the southern hemisphere and we also thank the time zone here for being night while our families celebrated Christmas at the usual table in the room of the Custom and here to be day while in Portugal ours slept.

Of course, of course it isn’t the same to celebrate Christmas here, so far. We have never ceased to miss and wish to celebrate the holidays the same way as always. But we were happy the way we could be. And yes, it was Christmas to us.

Contei-vos já aqui que resolvi passar o dia do meu aniversário a explorar. Foi a solução que arranjámos para não pensar em nada, nem em saudades nem em distância, e concentrarmo-nos em algo feliz, numa nova experiência que se revelou uma enorme surpresa e que acrescentou tanto a esta aventura que temos vivido pela Austrália. Falei-vos da visita ao Booderee Natural Park e das praias maravilhosas que por lá encontrámos, mas não vos falei da paragem que fizemos pelo caminho em Kiama. 

Ora, Kiama é uma pequena cidade em NSW a 40 km de Wollongong e a 121 km de Sydney. Tem uma paisagem maravilhosa e, por isso, marcámos a cidade como um ponto de paragem durante a viagem para passear um bocadinho e beber um café. Não estivemos por lá mais de meia hora, até porque penso que há muito pouco para visitar para além da zona da costa que só por si mereceu a visita. Ficam as fotos!

I already told you here that I decided to spend my birthday exploring. This was the solution we found for not thinking about how we miss our families and the distance to Portugal, so we focused on something happy, a new experience that revealed to be a great surprise that made our Australian adventure even better. I told you about the visit to Booderee Natural Park and all the beautiful beaches we found there but I didn’t tell you about the stop we made during the trip in Kiama. 

Well, Kiama is a small town in NSW, 40 km away from Wollongong and 121 km away from Sydney. Kiama has a gorgeous landscape and, as that, we decided to stop there to walk around and have a coffee during our trip to Jervis Bay. We weren’t the for more than half an hour and I think that there are not many places to visit there besides the coast. I’ll leave you with the photos we took!

Lembro-me de ser adolescente e, especialmente durante as férias de verão, ter uma enorme vontade de me ocupar, não só com atividades entre os amigos mas com algo realmente importante. Queria trabalhar, fazer voluntariado, qualquer coisa que me fizesse sentir útil e que me deixasse perceber o quê que eu gostava realmente de fazer. Com a minha mãe ainda fui à antiga APPC – Associação Portuguesa de Paralisia Cerebral questionar se havia alguma hipótese de fazer voluntariado. Resposta negativa. Era demasiado jovem. Acabei por fazer voluntariado na mesma associação, mas em Lisboa, anos mais tarde. 

Acabei por arranjar a solução no estabelecimento comercial de um familiar onde trabalhei durante dois verões. Trabalhei de segunda-feira a sábado, das 9h às 19h. Aos sábados trazia para casa 50 euros. 50 euros que me faziam sentir adulta e capaz. 

Trabalhei neste estabelecimento comercial, um cabeleireiro, enquanto sonhava estava a fazer outras coisas. Ainda assim, ter aquela ocupação foi uma sorte. Afinal de contas, embora a lei permita começar a trabalhar a partir dos 16 anos, não é comum em Portugal fazê-lo. Não sei se é por as oportunidades serem escassas ou se é mesmo uma questão social, se não estamos formatados para o fazer porque valorizamos outras coisas, achamos que os nossos adolescentes devem estar a fazer outro tipo de coisas. 

Foi por vir desta realidade que, quando comecei a trabalhar fora da Universidade, fiquei surpreendida com o que acontece aqui, na Austrália. É que, independentemente das condições económicas em que vivem, os adolescentes por aqui começam a trabalhar muito cedo e há, de facto, oportunidade para eles trabalharem. Percebi que a realidade era bem diferente da portuguesa quando comecei a trabalhar no restaurante. tive a oportunidade de trabalhar com duas raparigas de 19 anos que estavam ali há três anos. E aquele não era o primeiro trabalho delas. O quê que faziam ao mesmo tempo? Estudavam medicina. 

Semanas depois comecei a trabalhar numa loja de roupa. Fui orientada no primeiro dia por um rapaz que pacientemente me explicou tudo o que havia a explicar. “Então e que idade tens?”, perguntei. “19. Estou aqui há quase cinco anos. Quando cá cheguei não conseguia chegar a esta prateleira aqui em cima”. Acho que nem tive resposta para o Sam, que ao mesmo tempo está a terminar a licenciatura na faculdade na área das línguas e sonha ir viver para Espanha. 

Há aqui três coisas que me impressionam. A primeira é ter jovens a querer trabalhar desde tão cedo, independentemente das condições que os pais lhes possam proporcionar. A segunda é ter os pais a apoiar, a ajudar os filhos a contruir os seus currículos e a levá-los até aos sítios onde os podem entregar. A terceira é ver que este é um país de oportunidades e que há espaço para todos, que há locais que não se importam de ensinar e de guiar e que não têm medo de empregar um adolescente. 

Qualquer médico adulto por aqui já trabalhou num McDonald’s. Qualquer advogado já trabalhou numa loja de roupa. E ninguém olha de lado para aqueles que pura e simplesmente querem continuar a ser lojistas ou o que quer que seja. Já para não falar dos que têm vários trabalhos. Porque trabalho é trabalho e oportunidades geram oportunidades. Por isso mesmo é tão frequente qualquer jovem adulto por aqui dizer que já viajou pela Europa com os amigos, que tem o seu próprio carro, a sua casa alugada.

Eu estou a entrar no ritmo. Até janeiro mantenho-me em dois trabalhos. No início do ano retomo o trabalho na Universidade que está agora em stand-by durante as férias do verão.

A cada dia que passa, a cada experiência que vou tendo, percebo que há tanto, mas tanto por descobrir sobre este país ainda.

I remember of being an adolescent and, specially during summer school break, having a huge will of occupying myself, not only with activities between friends but with something serious. I wanted to work, volunteer, or any other thing that made me feel useful, understanding what I really would like to do with my future. I went with my mother to APPC – Portuguese Association of Cerebral Paralysis to ask if there was any chance of making any kind of volunteer on that institution. Negative answer. I was too young. I ended up working in that same association years later, in Lisbon. 

I found a solution on a familiar’s shop where I worked for two summers. I worked from Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday’s I brought with me 50 euros. 50 euros that made me feel adult and capable. 

I worked on this shop, a hairdresser, while I was dreaming of doing different things. Although, having that opportunity was great. After all, Portuguese law allows adolescents to work if they have more than 16 years old, however, that is not common. I don’t know if that’s because of the lack of opportunities or we all have been told that we should be doing other things instead of working with that age. 

That’s why I was so surprised with what happens here in Australia when I started working out of the University. No matter what de financial conditions are, most of the adolescents start working in an early age and there are in fact, plenty of opportunities for those adolescents. I realized that this reality is very different from the Portuguese when I started working on the restaurant, where I worked with two 19 girls that started working there three years ago. And that was not their first job. What were they doing at the same time? Studying medicine. 

A few weeks later working on a clothes shop. I was oriented by a guy that patiently explained everything to me. “So, how hold are you?”, I asked. “19. I started working here almost five years ago. When I arrived here I couldn’t even reach that shelve over there”. I think that I didn’t even had an answer for him that, at the same time, is finishing his bachelor’s in languages area and dreams about moving to Spain. 

Any doctor here was once a McDonald’s guy, every lawyer was once a retail guy. And no one looks at them in a different way. And I am not even talking about those who have many jobs at the same time. Work is work and opportunities create more opportunities. That’s why it is so frequent to find here and adolescent saying that he had already travelled through all Europe with friends, that he has his own car, his own rented house. 

I am catching the rhythm. Until January I will be dividing myself in to jobs. At the beginning of the year I’ll go back to the University that is now on summer break. 

Day after day, experience after experience, I understand that there is so much more to find about this country and these people.

Tinha algum receio sobre o que seria o meu aniversário longe. Longe da família e dos amigos com quem sempre partilhei este dia. Longe do meu espaço, da minha casa, dos cozinhados da minha mãe, da lareira, do frio. Tinha receio de estar longe, de acordar e de me desfazer em lágrimas quando percebesse que, efetivamente, não tinha a minha família e os meus amigos a poucos quilómetros de distância. 

Por isso mesmo, há várias semanas, pensei com o J num plano. Um plano para me fizesse esquecer de me lembrar das saudades. Um plano tão simples quanto alugar um carro e sair de manhã pela fresca estrada fora, à procura de um pedaço de paraíso qualquer nesta ilha. 

Tinha em mente ir até Jervis Bay onde iria encontrar a ‘praia mais branca da Austrália’ como me tinham prometido. Percorremos cerca de 100 km a partir de Wollongong com o GPS a guiar-nos por caminhos cada vez mais desertos. A certo ponto, já perto do local de chegada indicado pelo telemóvel, demos de caras com umas cancelas e com um porteiro para entrar no Booderee National Park (Parque Nacional Booderee). ‘Mas eu só quero ir à praia!’ disse eu enquanto o J entregava 11 dólares ao senhor para passar as barreiras do paraíso. Passados uns 20 minutos percebi que aqueles 11 dólares foram o dinheiro que melhor empreguei desde que cheguei à Austrália. 

O Booderee National Park é enorme. Tem uma estrada principal que atravessa o parque e a cada cortada damos de caras com uma paisagem de cortar a respiração. As praias, com água límpida e areia branca e fina, são incríveis! Estar ali fez-me ter a sensação que conhecia tão pouco deste mundo até aquele momento e que há ainda tanto por descobrir.

Embora a zona de Jervis Bay seja bastante conhecida por aqui e muito concorrida por surfistas, o Booderee National Park não é uma zona mantida a pensar no turista. É um pedaço de paraíso oferecido e mantido pela natureza. Não há comércio dirigido ao visitante. Aliás, é difícil encontrar um sítio para comprar uma garrafa de água. Vi apenas um minimercado que serve a população que ali reside e nada mais. 

Ah e os cangurus! Vimos imensos cangurus no habitat natural à distância de um palmo! Nada melhor do que mostrar-vos as fotografias e verem com os vossos próprios olhos.

I had some fear about what my birthday would be far away. Away from family and friends with whom I have always shared this day. Away from my space, from my house, from my mother's cooking, from the fireplace, from the cold. I was afraid of being away, of waking up and falling apart in tears when I realized that I did not actually have my family and my friends a few miles away.

That's why, several weeks ago, me and J thought about a plan. A plan to make me forget to remember my homesickness. A plan as simple as renting a car and leaving in the morning to the road, looking for a piece of paradise on this island.I had in mind to go to Jervis Bay where I would find the 'whitest beach in Australia' as I had been promised. We traveled about 100 km from Wollongong, with the GPS guiding us through increasingly deserted paths. At a certain point, already near the place of arrival indicated by the mobile phone, we saw some gates and a porter at the enter of the Booderee National Park. 'But I just want to go to the beach!' I said as J handed $ 11 to that man to pass the barriers of paradise. After about 20 minutes I realized that those 11 $ were the money that I used the best since I arrived in Australia.

The Booderee National Park is huge. It has a main road that crosses the park and at each crossing road, we found a beautiful landscape. The beaches, with clear water and fine white sand, are incredible! Being there made me feel that I knew so little of this world until that moment and that there is still so much to discover.

Although the area of ​​Jervis Bay is well known here and very crowded by surfers, the Booderee National Park is not a tourist preserve. It is a piece of paradise offered and maintained by nature. There is no trade directed to the visitor. In fact, it is difficult to find a place to buy a bottle of water. I saw only a mini-market that serves the population that lives there and nothing else. Oh and the kangaroos! We saw lots of kangaroos in the natural habitat so close to us! Nothing better than showing you the photos and seeing with your own eyes.

Comecei os 25 melhor do que imaginei poder começar. À procura de uma praia demos de caras com pedaço de paraíso que não se cansou de nos surpreender a cada quilómetro. E ao J... ao J a minha gratidão por ser a melhor companhia para todos os trilhos.

Não é que me tenha esquecido das saudades - é impossível esquecermos ou ignorarmos um sentimento do tamanho de um elefante que mora dentro de nós – mas consegui senti-las como uma sorte. Porque é de facto uma sorte ter na minha vida as pessoas que tenho, que não se deixam abalar pela distância física e se colocaram perto ontem e sempre.

I started the 25 better than I thought I could start. Looking for a beach, we found a piece of paradise that surprised us every mile. And to J ... to J my gratitude for being the best company for all the rails.

It's not that I've forgotten my homesickness-it's impossible to forget or ignore a feeling the size of an elephant that lives inside us-but I managed to feel them as luck. Because it is indeed fortunate to have in my life the people I have, who do not allow themselves to be shaken by their physical distance and kept close yesterday and always.

Falharam-me as fotografias de tudo o que vos conto. Achava eu que a minha mochila com máquina fotográfica robusta ia ser proibida de entrar à porta da Opera House, como aconteceria em Portugal e por isso mesmo não a levei. Quando cheguei percebi que podemos ter connosco tudo o que bem entendermos. Ninguém suspeita à partida que iremos cometer um crime com o que temos nas mãos. 

Os registos que temos são do telemóvel e, por isso, a qualidade não é muita. 

Dezembro começou assim da melhor maneira. Daqui para a frente há-de ser sempre a melhorar!

I don’t have photos of everything I talked to you about. I thought that my bag with a big machine wouldn’t be allowed to get into the Opera house, like would happen in Portugal. When I arrived I realized I could have with me anything I wanted to. No one suspects we are going to commit a crime with what we have in our hands. 

The photos and videos we have are from our mobile phones so, there’s not too much quality on them.

December started the best way. From now on it can only get better!

Emigrar há 60 anos era em tudo diferente de emigrar nos dias de hoje. Antigamente, no geral, quem emigrava eram aqueles com pouca formação que pretendiam trabalhar arduamente, juntar dinheiro para, em Portugal, poder comprar ou construir uma casa que visitariam uma vez por ano (com sorte) durante as décadas seguintes. E hoje? Será que os objetivos de quem faz as malas e decide abandonar o seu país, são os mesmos? Não tenho na mão os dados de um estudo que me diga qual é o perfil de quem emigra, mas, enquanto pessoa observadora e atenta, arrisco em dizer que hoje, o emigrante é muito diferente do de há meio século atrás. Arrisco em dizer que quem hoje sai de Portugal é, na maioria, pessoal formado que vai à procura de novas oportunidades profissionais num sector muito diferente daquele em que trabalharam os emigrantes de há meio século atrás. 

E arrisco dizer tudo isto porque sei que há muita coisa diferente entre mim e os meus tios que há décadas se espalharam pela Alemanha, os Estados Unidos, a Suíça... Acredito, ainda assim, que as dúvidas que assolam duas gerações de emigrantes sejam as mesmas. A primeira é: “que tipo de emigrante queres ser?” 

Quando saímos de Portugal esperamos passar por uma primeira fase durante a qual ainda estamos a estabilizar a vida no novo país, de dificuldades financeiras. Depois, depois começamos a trabalhar e a vida (financeira incluída) começa a ganhar rumo. Começamos a amealhar e é nesta fase que são tomadas as grandes decisões e durante a qual fazemos as escolhas que darão rumo à nossa vida nos anos seguintes. 

Que tipo de emigrante quero eu ser? Quero ser o tipo de emigrante cujo grande objetivo é juntar dinheiro para mais tarde levar para Portugal? Quero juntar todo o dinheiro com um projeto futuro em vista? Quero trabalhar e não pensar sequer em ir a Portugal nos próximos anos para não gastar? Conheço tantos que não vêm as famílias há décadas... Quero ter um gordo mealheiro ou quero ter o diário cheio de histórias? 

É difícil. É difícil fazer opções. Se por um lado quero pensar numa vida futura confortável, por outro não quero agora deixar de viver. Trabalhar para a felicidade é uma tarefa diária e ser feliz não é um projeto a longo prazo, é um projeto de hoje, de agora. Estou correta? 

Ser emigrante é mais do que a coragem de abandonar o nosso país, a nossa zona de conforto. Ser emigrante é ter consciência do impacto que as nossas decisões provocam nos que nos são mais próximos, é escolher a vida que queremos viver, os adultos que vamos ser, o que vamos proporcionar aos que aí virão. E sim, eu sei que estas dúvidas também assolam qualquer um que se mantenha no seu país de origem, mas as coisas são diferentes, os riscos são outros e as expectativas também. É como saltar num trampolim ou estar lá em cima, a caminhar na corda bamba. Mas, tudo isto são escolhas, certo? E o conceito ‘altos riscos, altos ganhos’ é o que dá piada à coisa.

Emigrating 60 years ago was, in everything, very different from emigrating nowadays. In the past, in general, those who emigrated had no formation pretending to work hard, gather lots of money for, in Portugal, buy or build a house that they would visit once a year (with some luck) during the forward decades. What about today? Are the goals of those who pack their bags and decide to abandon their country, the same? I don’t have any scientific data in my hands that tells me what’s the profile of those who decide to emigrate but, as an observer, I risk saying that, people who emigrate now, are very different from those who emigrated decades ago. I risk saying that those who leave Portugal now are, in their majority, people that studied that need to search for new professional opportunities in a very different sector from those who emigrated decades ago. 

And I risk saying all this because I know that there are a lot of different things between me and my uncles that decades ago spread through German, United States, Switzerland… I do believe though that we all, two generations of emigrants, have the same doubts. The first one is: “what kind of emigrant do you want to be?” 

When we leave Portugal we know that we will have a first stage during which we will be stabilizing our finances. Then, we start to work and our life (financial also) starts to get on track. We start to gather some money and, in this stage, we make big decisions, big choices that will change our future. 

What kind of emigrant do I want to be? Do I want to be the kind of emigrant which only goal is to earn money to send to Portugal? Do I want to keep all my money with a future project on my mind? Do I want to work hard and not even think about going to Portugal to see my family and friends to save all the money? I know so many people that haven’t seen their families in the last decades… do I want to have all the money or a diary full of stories? 

It’s hard. It’s hard to make options. If, in one side, I want to think about having a comfortable future, on the other, I don’t want to stop living. Working for happiness is a daily job and not a long term project, it’s a today project, a now project. Am I right? 

Being an emigrant is much more that having the courage of abandoning our country, our comfort zone. Being an emigrant is being aware of the impact our decisions have in others, is choosing the life we want to live, the adults we will become, what we are going to give to those who will come. And yes, I know that all these doubts also live in the head of those who choose to stay in their countries, but things are different, we have different risks, different expectations. It’s like jumping on a trampoline or being up there, walking on tightrope. But, all this are choices, aren’t they? And the concept ‘high risks, high gains’ is what really makes all this funny.
